Initiative for Lights Rail Line to Siem Reap International Airport

Objectives and Project Timeline

The Cambodian Government is currently studying a plan to construct a light rail line from the town of Siem Reap to the new Siem Reap International Airport. This project aims to address transportation issues and improve connectivity to and from the airport.

According to Sun Chanthol, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, all major works at Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport have been completed. This brings the project closer to its scheduled opening in October.

Progress on the “Airport Highway” Construction

The construction company has completed approximately 94% of the 24.5 km-long “Airport Highway,” which is intended to connect the airport to National Road 6. The highway is expected to be completed in September. This represents a significant step forward in providing convenient and fast transportation between the airport and the central town of Siem Reap and surrounding areas.

Scheduled Opening

Siem Reap International Airport is expected to be officially inaugurated on October 16. The inauguration ceremony is planned to be presided over by Prime Minister Hun Sen and high-ranking officials from the People’s Republic of China. The airport project has received investment from Chinese companies and plays a crucial role in promoting tourism and economic development in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Estimated Siem Reap International Airport Capacity

According to Deputy Secretary Sinn Chanserey Vutha, the airport will have a runway longer than 1,800 meters and will be classified as a 4E airport. The airport is expected to accommodate large passenger aircraft such as Airbus A-340-300 and A350-900, as well as Boeing B777-200/300ER and B747-300/400. Initially, the airport will have the capacity to handle around 58,000 flights and 7 million passengers per year. However, in the future, between the years 2030 and 2040, these figures are expected to increase to 86,000 flights and 10.5 million passengers annually.
